I am a west coast based correspondent with De Tijd and L'Echo, which are the leading daily business newspapers of Belgium. On occasion, my work also appears in media in The Netherlands. After four very fascinating years in New York, I moved to California in 2015. From the San Francisco Bay Area, I cover the US with a focus on technology, business, politics and culture. Most of my articles are in Dutch and French.
I live in Oakland, CA, with my wife and son.
About my first name: Roel is the Dutch version of the French and English name Roland. I guess it's also related to the Spanish name Raul. Don't say [ro-wel] as in Joel, but [rool] as in: a rule, or to rule. Don't bother about my last name.
